What Are You Believing For?

40 Days of Prayer: Day 2

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” —Hebrews 11: 6

God is not limited. Time does not effect Him. Death cannot threaten Him. Money is not a stress factor for Him. Oxygen is not necessary for His existence. He needs no education because He is all knowing. Nothing limits God. We, in contrast, are limited. Time takes it’s toll on all of us. Death is like a shadow following us around. We can’t get away from it completely. Money—well, you know about money—it is a major stress factor for most of us. Try breathing without oxygen and see how much you need that. And the amount of things that we don’t know makes our pile of knowledge look like a newspaper beside an Everest-sized mountain of books. We ARE limited.

It is our limitation and not God’s lack of limitation that illuminates this verse in Hebrews bringing it into sharper focus. Our faith is like a container. The bigger the container, the more it holds, but every container has its limits. God wants to give us good things. It pleases Him to do so. When we come to Him asking for good things but our container—our faith—is not big enough to hold them, God is displeased.

It’s time to stop asking and start believing. When we believe that God hears our prayer and rewards our faith we will begin to expect God to fill our containers. We will stop begging Him and simply trust Him. Our thoughts will change. Our attitudes will change. Our joy will grow to the edges of our container. And our containers will grow the more God fills them up. Without faith it is impossible to please God because without a container, God can’t give us “every good and perfect gift” (James 1:17).

So, what are you believing for?
